RENO — A Reno youth activist who has fought against gang activity is facing drug charges.

Reno police say 39-year-old Roberto Nerey was arrested Wednesday on two counts of trafficking methamphetamine. Investigators allege he sold more than two ounces during two separate controlled buys conducted as part of a task force investigation.

Nerey is executive director of Guiding A New Generation, a nonprofit organization that says it gives youth alternatives to gang activity.

Nerey is a former gang member who served a prison term in 1990 for conspiracy to commit murder.

He later wrote a book called, "An American Latino's Story of Gang's, Prison and Redemption — If Only I Had Known."
