SPARKS — An 8-year-old Spanish Springs girl was listed in fair condition Friday after she was hit by a passing car while riding her bike.

Police said the girl was riding southbound on Talking Sparrow Drive Thursday evening when she failed to stop her bike at the stop sign at the intersection with West Calle de la Plata. An oncoming truck, driven by the 16-year-old son of a Washoe County Sheriff’s deputy, swerved but hit the girl’s bike, throwing her to the sidewalk.

The young girl was transported from the scene by REMSA ambulance and taken to Renown Regional Medical Center. The driver did not sustain any injuries.

The speed limit on West Calle de la Plata is posted 35 miles per hour and speed is not considered to be a contributing factor in this accident.

Witnesses to the event that have not provided a statement are asked to contact Trooper Mike Stapledon at 689-4623 or the Department of Public Safety Communications Center at 687-0400 regarding case No. NHP-1008191900.

Since both involved parties are younger than 18 year old and the investigation is continuing, their names are not going to be released at this time, police said in a written release.

Whoops! Talk about gross factual errors! I referenced the RGJ, and this is the Sparks Tribune! In my hurry to rant, I pinned a poorly written story on the wrong rag. Sorry.

I love the undertones of this fact-smothering article about a cop's son was involved in a traffic accident. The girl was on a bike and the boy hit her. Accident. Stuff happens. But the headline intimates that the boy driving the car hit her "bike" and not her. She just happened to be on the bike at the time as she was thrown to the sidewalk. Come on RGJ. Don't hold the offspring of the police to a different standard. Just say what happened. You sugar-coated this one and you did a lame job. You really did a disservice to the boy, too. You made him look sinister and guilty as you tried to frame an 8-year-old as the sole cause of the accident.
