Mark Sexton Band plays at the Nugget

Izabella returns to the Great Basin in Sparks

Izabella is a dance-inspired rock and soul band hailing from the Bay Area. This six-piece family of musical explorers is avowed for producing danceable, dynamic grooves. Izabella's unique blend of fist-pumping guitar, funked-out keys, poly-rhythmic beats and impassioned vocals is unparalleled in the genre.

Since its inception in the fall of 2006, and after hitting the road full time in 2008, Izabella has performed more than 200 gigs, including some key performances at summer festivals, including High Sierra, 4 Peaks, Las Tortugas and Bobolink.

This solid tour schedule combined with an elevated level of stage and light production has helped Izabella garner various accolades, including the Jambands.com title, “New Groove of the Month” back in August 2008.

'Dust & Illusions' film

Back by popular demand, the Nevada Museum of Art will again screen "Dust & Illusions: A History of Burning Man," from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday. The film is directed and produced by Olivier Bonin, has won numerous awards and has been called the “only worthwhile documentary about Burning Man.” Playa garb encouraged. This event cost is $10 and $8 for NMA members.

TOCCATA: Baroque Brassy is Classy concerts

TOCCATA continues the Big Blue Summer Musicfest with Baroque Brassy is Classy featuring Mark Lord and Robert Nagel.

On Saturday TOCCATA Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus will continue its 21-concert 2010 Big Blue Summer Musicfest with a concert series entitled Baroque Brassy is Classy.  The first performance of the series is at 5:30 pm at the Steinway Piano Gallery at 500 E. Moana Lane in Reno and features Vivaldi’s "Concerto for two Trumpets in C Major" performed by Mark Lord and guest artist, Robert Nagel. Also performed will be the "Sonata for two Trumpets and Strings" by Petronio Franceschini featuring William van Meter and Nagel.

The concert also features organist David Brock performing the "Concerto for Organ and Strings," "Opus 4 No. 2 in B Flat" by Georg Frederich Händel as well as several selections composed or arranged for brass, vocalists and strings by Nagel. The concert will finish with one of J. S. Bach’s most enduring works, "Cantata No. 147: Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.”

Vocal soloists include sopranos Joy Strotz, Anna Helwing, and Michelle Norris and baritone Stuart Duke.

Baroque Brassy is Classy will be repeated on Sunday at 4 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Incline Village and Monday at 7:30 pm in St. Theresa Catholic Church in South Lake Tahoe. The final presentation of the series will be on Tuesday at 7:30 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church in Reno.  Maestro James Rawie will conduct all performances.

Tickets are $35 for reserved seating. Nonreserved seating is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors 62 years and older and $5 for students younger than 23 with a valid student ID.  Children younger than 12 enter free with a paying adult. Tickets can be purchased in advance by credit card at www.toccatatahoe.com or at the door by cash or check.

These concerts are supported by grants from the Kling Family and Thorney Point Foundations.

The Firkin & Wolf celebrates grand opening

The Firkin & Wolf, an English style pub that recently opened at The Summit in south Reno, will celebrate its grand opening through Saturday. Every day from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. the restaurant will offer a "pints and pies specials" where guests will receive a free pizza with the purchase of a pint of beer. Pints and pies specials are from 1:30 to 5 p.m. now through Saturday.

The Firkin & Wolf’s 10 differently styled thin crust pizzas are exclusively offered at The Summit location and a brand new addition to their menu. The restaurant also features one of the largest selections of draught beers in Reno.

The grand opening will culminate on Saturday night with the Delta Wires, a high-energy harmonica and blues band from San Francisco that will perform at 9 p.m. outside the restaurant. The Firkin & Wolf will be offering drink and food specialties during the performance.
