RENO — Members of the community are invited to apply to serve on the new citizens’ advisory committee to add their input as to the future of the Washoe County Library System.

The Washoe County Library System board of trustees is seeking a diverse, representative committee to make recommendations regarding future locations of branches or other outlets, types of services and possible funding sources. Committee members should have a strong interest in the role and value of public libraries.

The citizens’ advisory committee would be charged with making recommendations in the following areas:

• Criteria for continued operations, including possible branch closures and also in response to possible future budget reductions.

• Locations for new or replacement libraries, including criteria for possible reopening of previously closed branches and restoration of eliminated services

• Services that should be considered for implementation, expansion, contraction or elimination

• Sources for additional funding to achieve proposals within the above areas

Criteria for selection will include a strong interest in the role and value of public libraries, possession of a library card, volunteer activities, community activism, business experience and, if possible, experience with local government operations, especially in the areas of planning and finance.

About 15 individuals will be selected for the committee, which is expected to meet monthly, or on some other regular basis, for up to 18 months. All age groups, including teens, are encouraged to apply.

Applications will be accepted until Sept 7.

Application forms are available at any Washoe County library or at www.washoecountylibrary.us. The completed form can be turned in at the library or can be mailed to:

Washoe County Library System Board of Trustees

P.O. Box 2151

Reno, NV 89505

Applications sent through the U.S. Postal Service must be received by Sept. 7. Being postmarked by that date is not sufficient, according to library staff.
