SPARKS — Jeanne Higgins, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest supervisor, signed the Decision Notice and Finding of No Significant Impact for the Rim to Reno Trail System Project on July 16. The trail system will connect the Tahoe Rim Trail, which circles the mountain ridges above Lake Tahoe, through the Mt. Rose Wilderness to Reno.
This project receives funds from the state’s Question 1 Fund, which seeks to improve and increase recreational opportunities in Nevada. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association administered the grant and worked with the U.S. Forest Service to complete the environmental analysis.
The trail system can be accessed through the Mt. Rose Summit Trailhead, Thomas Creek Trailhead, and Washoe County’s new Michael D. Thompson Trailhead. Ultimately, the trail system can be accessed from other Washoe County Trailheads, including the proposed Ballardini Trailhead, which is scheduled for completion in 2011.
