RENO — The Nevada Highway Patrol wishes to remind residents and inform visitors of some important traffic safety tips to help keep roadways safe for all travelers during Hot August Nights.

• If you are going to drink, don’t drive. A taxi from downtown Reno to almost anywhere in Reno or Sparks will cost less than $40. Being arrested for driving under the influence will cost you thousands of dollars.

• Buckle up. Seat belts not only save lives, but they are required by law in Nevada. Children younger than 6 years old must be in a child restraint seat appropriate for their size and age.

• Don’t text while driving. Talking on a cell phone is a distraction, but texting while driving is downright dangerous. Sixteen percent of fatal vehicle accidents in 2008 were caused by texting.  If you must text, find someplace safe to park first.

• Construction zones are on both Interstate 80 and U.S. 395 where major projects are under way. The speed limit has been reduced in construction zones and troopers are strictly enforcing traffic laws in these areas. The penalty is doubled for citations issued in these areas.

• If you are involved in an accident, immediately stop, render aid to injured parties and notify law enforcement. If it is a non-injury accident and you are obstructing traffic, move to a safe location off the road to help prevent secondary accidents.

• Drive defensively and be aware of your surroundings, particularly when you are traveling through areas where Hot August Nights events are underway.

• Dial *NHP (*647) to report drunk drivers, traffic accidents, stranded or disabled motorists or any suspicious incidents occurring on any of Nevada’s highways.  It is a free call and you will be directly connected to the nearest Nevada Highway Patrol dispatch center.
