CARSON CITY — Nevada employment security officials say they are prepared to restart claims for extended jobless benefits once legislation is passed by Congress.

The Senate could cast its final vote today.

But officials say it will take time before everyone eligible begins to receive benefits.

Claimants will receive letters in about a week of the bill’s passage notifying them of their potential eligibility. Officials say the letter will include detailed instructions to prevent people from long waits on the telephone.

The state on Monday reported Nevada’s jobless rate rose to 14.2 percent in June, a new record high.

Nearly 94,000 Nevadans are receiving unemployment benefits. About 40,000 lost their benefits when federal extension programs expired in May.
