LAS VEGAS — After a one-month drop reported in June, gas prices in Nevada in July are the third highest in the nation, according to a statement issued by AAA on Tuesday. The increase in the Truckee Meadows is extra painful.
The average gas price in the Silver State is up to $2.93 a gallon — a 5 cent increase from AAA Nevada’s report issued June 8. The national average for unleaded gas is $2.71, a 1 cent decrease from last month.
Prices are up a little higher in northern Nevada, according to the report, because of the source of the area’s refineries. Gas to northern Nevada comes from the Bay Area, where prices are normally higher than in Southern California, where southern Nevada gets its gas.
The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in Reno is $3.11, an increase of 17 cents, whereas Las Vegas felt a 5 cent increase to a $2.85 average. Gas in Sparks is up 11 cents to an average of $3.11 per gallon and Carson City is up 8 cents to $2.96 per gallon on average, according to AAA Nevada.
“Travel projections for the July 4th holiday were above and beyond what most analysts expected and retail gas stations certainly adjusted their prices for that,” said Michael Geeser, a spokesperson for AAA Nevada. “The good news for consumers in Nevada is that so far in July, gas prices have only fluctuated up or down about one cent a day.”
Nevada’s place as third highest in the country excludes Alaska and Hawaii. California has the highest prices with a $3.14 average per gallon. The least expensive gas in the county can be found in Greenville, S.C. at $2.43 a gallon.
