STEAD - This year's IKF series, for Region 11, ended its run at Desert Park Raceway. On hand to contest various races were 91-drivers and several class champions were at steak.

These events are ones that the local drivers want to win as they are defending their home turf from the California invaders. For one local racer, the day ended with him sweeping both of his races.

After taking the first one, in F-80 Seniors, Mark Nason said, "Today has been marked by clean racing and I really wanted to pass without touching and we did pretty much that as we got close but no hard contact. Kevin (Tanaka) is fast and it makes me look better when I beat him."

Right after the race began Tanaka jumped into the lead followed by Nason, Cody McKinney and Gerry Williams. Later in the race Williams suffered a mechanical problem that put him out of competition.

Nason, on the other hand, finally used a draft down the front straight to make the winning pass dropping Tanaka to second at the end followed by Cody McKinney.

When his second race began, in F-80 Masters, Nason got the hole shot but this time Williams was on his tail followed by McKinney, who finish in third. Lap after lap Williams kept the pressure on but at the checkered Nason scored his second victory of the day making it a sweep for him and the only NNKC member with two victories.

"We're here to protect our turf and the guys from the club all raced hard today," Nason said. "What a good weekend, I'm glad Northern Nevada brought it home."

At the post-race tech area Williams said, "This is an IKF race but we call it a club race. I kept coming up then I'd make a mistake and, well, Mark's too hard to beat."

The Jr. Super Sportsman main was a nail biter for J.R. Raczko. He had to finish third to win the series championship but during the race his nose fairing came loose.

Up front Luis Tyrell had the race to himself but behind him Raczko had to slow and hold on to the loose bodywork because if it came off he'd be disqualified. In the final laps Jacob Huff closing fast but ran out of time giving Raczko third and his title.

Probably the closest race of the day came in the Jr. 1-2 Cycle feature. Right from the start Blaine Rocha and Ryler Burk were so close a large beach towel could have covered both their karts.

Lap after lap these two youngsters ripped around the track with only inches separating them. Then, on the final lap, Burk managed to take the point and reach the checkered flag first with Rocha right behind him.

Earlier the heat races ended with Chelsi Wagner going off course at the fastest point and flipping her kart. While it looked serious, and she was transported to St. Mary's Hospital, the 16-year-old came away just sore and with bruises.

The day ended with Mike Botelho Jr. winning a special money race for the Senior Super Sportsmen class. In the past couple of weeks drivers have been adding to the pot and Botelho wound up wining all the marbles after a furious, place-swapping contest.

While the day ended too late for this report, complete results can be found at: www.mylaps.com.

•On Saturday evening the American Valley Speedway in Quincy, Calif., staged one of its regular points races. The highlight of the night was the 20-lap feature for the IMCA Modifieds.

The race itself had a rough start as it took two attempts to get things rolling then the race was slowed by four cautions. Finally things got rolling with local Bill Pearson holding the point until Lenny Toolanen took if from him.

Lap after lap they roared around the oval until Pearson saw his chance and pounced, taking the lead back.

A last lap caution bunched all the cars and when the green waved Pearson took off with Toolanen in hot pursuit. They finished in that order with Russell Rosario coming home third.

"The key was that we changed lines, when I moved up he had to move down and it was more slick down in one and two," Pearson said. "We had to run the same line in three and four but he was going in harder than me and I was slowing down earlier but could pick up the gas sooner. It was a fun race and I like racing like that."

The pro stock feature was a runaway for Craig Neiman as was the mini stock race, whose winner is listed as Madden Racing.

On hand were the Dwarf Cars and Derek Rosse used patience and a late race charge to claim the B main victory. Since the cars run two races they soon lined up again for the A main.

However things didn't go so well the second time around as it took a couple of attempts to get that event rolling.

Jason Crosby was one of the early leaders while Rosse was mired deep in the pack. Four cautions slowed the pace and allowed Rosse to move toward the front. On the final green, with two to go, he used an outside pass to claim the victory and sweep the night.

•Rattlesnake Raceway hosted its traditional July 4th races and Fireworks on Sunday.

One notable race was the Hobby Stock feature where local Richard Italiano, who used a patient steady drive, to steer clear of the wrecks and pull off the victory. The IMCA Modified feature was a two-car duel with Gene Kay claiming the victory over Shawn Natenstedt.

Jeff Olschewka won the Pro Stock main after holding off Josh Ogg while, in the sprint car feature race, Bob Cooney won the race followed by Mike White. The Rat Mod feature, won by Duncan Lee, had a three-car tangle that left the race of David Woods on its side - fortunately he was uninjured in the melee.
