CARSON CITY — Fire restrictions along the eastern Sierra front will take effect July 16.
Federal and state land managers say an abundance of weeds and grasses spurred by a cool, wet spring are quickly drying out. And with lingering drought conditions and temperatures expected in the high 90s next week, fire danger is on the rise.
The restrictions ban campfires outside developed areas, or stove fires except a portable stove using gas or pressurized liquid fuel.
Smoking is prohibited except at developed sites or inside an enclosed vehicle.
Welding and use of tracer rounds, steel-core ammunition or exploding targets while target shooting also are banned.
Vehicles within the Sierra Fire Protection District must stay on established gravel or dirt roads. Operators must carry an ax, shovel and a gallon of water.
