In the 12-year-old 70-foot bases tournament, Spanish Springs posted a 9-6 triumph over Fallon in a first-round tournament tilt.
Spanish Springs took a 4-2 lead to the sixth and final inning but blew the game open with a five-run rally in the top of the inning. Fallon tacked on four in the bottom of the sixth, but it proved too little too late.
“Absoutely it’s nice to get a win in that first game,” Spanish Springs manager Damon O’Connell said. “But I didn’t think the kids played like they should or could have. They can play a lot better than they did. I just think we had some first-game jitters.”
Spanish Springs got single runs in the first and second innings, but the lead was short-lived as Fallon knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom of inning two.
Spanish Springs responded by scoring the next seven runs, one each in the third and fifth before its outburst in the top of the sixth.
Spanish Springs plays again Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against the winner of Silver State and Sun Valley.
In the 10-under tournament, A Fallon comeback nixed a Spanish Springs victory. Fallon ralled in the final three innings to capture a 7-5 win over its Spanish Springs rivals.
Spanish Springs jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings, but could not hold on as Fallon pushed across four in the fourth, two in the fifth and added another run in the sixth.
Spanish Springs got off to a 2-0 lead with two first-inning runs. Hayden Bosco and Derek Mannens both walked and scored. Then in the Spanish Springs third, Tanner Smith walked and scored. Logan Cox reached on a fielder’s choice and later scored and CJ Hires had an RBI single and circled the sacks.
“Our offense just stopped and Fallon started hitting the ball a little bit,” Spanish Springs coach Wayne Smith said. “Their hits found some holes and we made a couple errors that hurt us. We left a lot of runners on and couldn’t come up with the big hits. We had our chances.”
The local squad plays again Saturday against the loser of Fallon and Silver state at 5:30 p.m.
In the 11-year-old, 70-foot bases tournament opener, Spanish Springs cruised to an 8-1 romp over Silver State.
Derek Stuber pitched all six innings for the complete-game victory for Spanish Springs. The Sparks team keyed its win with a five-run, third-inning offensive explosion.
Spanish Springs plays again at 5:30 p.m. today against Fallon.
