Both the Spanish Springs High School girls and boys basketball teams host summer programs aimed at improving their players’ skill sets during the offseason. Those programs were in full swing Tuesday at SSHS.

In the top photo, Wayne Mendozona is running a three-day evening for the Cougars girls. He demonstrates working to have an explosive first step during the drill shown above.

Mendozona, who runs the the Quick Handle club program in suburban Seattle, is in northern Nevada running his annual summer basketball day camp this week at the Boys and Girls Club of the Truckee Meadows. He has local ties as he graduated from Reed High of east Sparks in 1977.

In the bottom photo, Shannon Kelly, who will be a sophomore at Spanish Springs when the school opens for its 10th school year in late August, drives to the hoop for a finger roll layup against McQueen. The SSHS boys program hosts a weekly Tuesday night Junior Varsity league.
