SPANISH SPRINGS — Lazy 5 Regional Park is gearing up for its sixth season of good summer music in the great outdoors. The park will kick off its free weekly concert series Wednesday and continue it through September.

With the outdoor concert series’ funding secured for a sixth season, Lazy 5 recreation coordinator Barbara Borges said this year’s sponsors were generous enough to allow the number of performances to be extended.

“We have 10 concerts,” Borges said. “We’re up two from eight and we started with six.

“We were just lucky in this economy that we have some excellent sponsors that have been with us since the beginning,” Borges added about the series, which started in 2004. “We have some new sponsors this year as well. With the amount that was given to us and the community we were able to increase the amount of concerts this year.”

The concerts, which are held at the park’s pavilion and grass area, usually attract hundreds of people, Borges said. She added that the music is family friendly and makes for a nice evening at the park. Performances begin every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and go to about 8 p.m. through Sept. 1.

The musician schedule is as follows:

• Wednesday: Motown and Top 40s with Escalade

• July 7: Blues rock with Guitar Woody and the Boilers

• July 14: Bluegrass with Rattlesnake Mountain

• July 21: Celtic and folk music with Contraband

• July 28: Classic rock and Rock with Bad Neighbors

• Aug. 4: American variety with Bias and Dunn

• Aug. 11: Classic rock with Critical Mass

• Aug. 18: Classic rock jams with Paisley Brain Cells

• Aug. 25: Boogie and blues with Terrapin Road

• Sept. 1: Blues and Americana with the Colin Ross Band

Borges said with the expectation of more families looking for free entertainment opportunities, she suggests arriving at the park at 6 p.m. Audience members are encouraged to bring low-back lawn chairs, coolers and food but no glass containers are allowed in the park. Also, Borges said pets are not permitted at the performances.

For people who do not pack a picnic dinner, Borges said Summit Christian Church will be holding a free barbecue again this year beginning July 7.

In addition to the concert series, Lazy 5’s water park is open Wednesday and Thursday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
