SPARKS — On Sunday at 12:28 a.m. ,Sparks Police officers responded to the 3500 block of Longridge Drive on a report of a suspect armed with a handgun inside a residence. The suspect had threatened the other occupants of the residence with the handgun.

Upon arrival, officers set up perimeter and began to call inside the residence. Two of the victims came running out of the house toward the officers and were removed from the location. Officers tried to negotiate with the suspect, who was identified as 30-year-old Kane Akers or Sparks. However, Akers refused to answer the phone or speak with officers.

The Sparks Police Department SWAT team along with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team were called to the location. After five hours of attempting to get Akers to come out of the house, SWAT team members fired tear gas and noise flash diversionary devices into the house. Akers was located inside the house and surrendered without further incident.

Akers was arrested and booked into the Washoe County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, domestic battery and false imprisonment. Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the Sparks Police Department at 353-2231.
