Martini, a lifelong Sparks resident and 1964 graduate of Sparks High School, was appointed to the Sparks City Council representing Ward 3 in July 1999 to complete a term, according to the city's website. He was re-elected in June 2001 and again in November 2004. He was elected mayor pro tem by the City Council in July 2003 and served until Feb. 22, 2005 when he was sworn in as mayor after the death of Mayor Tony Armstrong. He was elected to a full term in November 2006.
Schmitt was elected to the Sparks City Council in June 2001, and was re-elected in November 2004. He is the past president of the Nevada League of Cities and Municipalities (NLCM) and is a member of the NLCM Legislative Committee. Schmitt is also a member of the National league of Cities and is a past member of the Board of Directors. Schmitt presently serves on the Advisory Board and the Program Committee and is the chairman of the Sparks Tourism and Marketing Committee.
City Council Ward 2 race
Bob Lopes was the top vote-getter in Tuesday's primary for the Ward 2 seat that is available with Councilman Phil Salerno being termed out.
With nine of 11 precincts reporting, Lopes had 36 percent of the vote with 413 ballots cast for him.
Taking the second of two available spots for the November ballot was businessman Ed Lawson. A Sparks resident since 1995, Lawson is active in the Sparks Rotary Club and works for Young Electric Sign Company, according to his website.
Lawson and Lopes will square off in the November election.
Six candidates were vying for the two spots in the Ward 2 race. The losing candidates were William Johnson (8 percent of the vote), Nicolas Lee (6 percent), Randy Mellinger (11 percent) and Jarrod Williams (6 percent).
