SUN VALLEY — The last day of school marks the start of summer fun for many children in northern Nevada. For thousands of children in our region, however, it also represents the end of the school year’s lunch program that offers them free nutritious meals every weekday. The Food Bank of Northern Nevada is kicking off its Children’s Summer Food Program on Wednesday from 12:45 to 1:15 p.m. at Virginia Palmer Elementary School, 5800 Klondike Drive in Sun Valley.

The event is being held to spread the word about the availability, locations and scheduling of the Children’s Summer Food Program and to encourage and educate parents of hungry children to use the program.

According to the food bank, one-third of Washoe County school children are hungry year round. The Children’s Summer Food program offers 30 meal locations in the communities to serve hungry children. All children between 1 and 18 years of age are welcome to participate. Visit www.fbnn.org or call 331-FOOD (331-3663) for locations and times.
