The public will have the opportunity to view the privately-owned and operated facility and the excess wild horses that were gathered from the Calico Mountains Complex last winter. The horses have successfully transitioned to their new environment, regained their health and have been prepared for adoption by being freeze-marked, vaccinated and de-wormed.
Potential adopters are invited to attend the tours and identify horses they would like to adopt. The BLM will have added staff available to serve unlimited numbers of visitors. About 82 Calico Internet Adoption horses already have been moved to the Palomino Valley facility, 20 miles east of Sparks and are available for viewing by potential adopters. Individuals interested in attending the tours are asked to call 475-2222 to schedule an appointment and get directions to the facility. Information about the Internet adoption is available by calling (866) 468-7826 or visiting www.blm.gov/adoptahorse/.
The Indian Lakes facility, about a one-hour drive from Reno, encompasses 80 acres and includes 30 large holding pens that are 70,000 square feet per pen and safely holds about 100 horses per pen. The horses are fed an abundance of hay each day and a veterinarian routinely inspects the horses and provides necessary medical care. The facility can hold a maximum of 2,850 horses.
