The Cinco de Mayo celebration in Victorian Square was a fairly peaceful weekend for police, the Sparks Redevelopment Agency learned on Monday.
During the May 3-4 street party, police only arrested five people, Sparks Police Lieut. Chad Hawkins reported.
The low crime rate could have resulted from the family-oriented crowds, vigilant police presence and the late afternoon thunderstorms.
On May 3, police arrested three teenagers on minor in possession of alcohol charges.
From their perch atop the Silver Club, police spotted two gangs flashing signs and beginning to argue down below. Police were able to prevent the argument from escalating into violence. Sparks Police arrested one young man who was carrying a loaded gun in his waistband.
"There was heavy gang attendance both days, especially in the afternoon," Hawkins said. "We had some people from out of town, but for the most part, we had local gangs."
Police made their final arrest of the weekend of a woman who was intoxicated and had a warrant out for her arrest.
No taxpayer funds were used for the event, Sparks Parks and Recreation Director Stan Sherer said. Nevada Hispanic Services, the sponsor of the event, paid 100 percent of all security, Sherer said. This included paying overtime to Sparks Police officers, totaling about $24,000 for the weekend.
