Once again, Spanish Springs got solid pitching performances. Senior Karlyn Jones limited McQueen to four hits during seven innings of work in a six-strikeout, no-walk outing in Game 1. The lone Lancers run in the opener was unearned.
In Game 2, Cougars junior Danica Arterburn scattered six McQueen hits during a dominating 11-strikeout, one-walk complete-game shutout.
“Our pitching, not only today but all year, has been phenomenal,” Spanish Springs coach Jeff Davidson said. “Karlyn and Danica once again did a great job.”
In Game 1, Spanish Springs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third after Ashley Decker walked and scored following a Stevie Trevino sacrifice bunt and a Karley Hopkins double.
The game was still tight as Spanish Springs came up in the sixth. Leading 2-1, the visiting Cougars blew the game open with a five-run outburst. The rally started with two outs. Trevino and Hopkins singled while Jones walked to load the bases. Sydney Darby laced an RBI single and Karly Hall followed with a two-run single. Arterburn finished the scoring in the inning with a two-run double.
The SSHS crew tacked on two more runs in the seventh.
In Game 2, Arterburn was busy holding the Lancers scoreless but she wasn’t getting much offensive support. The Cougars scored two runs in the first, but didn’t score again until the seventh.
In the first, Decker singled and stole second. Trevino singled to leave Cougars on the corners. A Hopkins double scored Decker and a Jones single plated Trevino.
The score remained 2-0 until the HDL champs took their final turn on offense. Trevino and Hopkins singled to get the local club going in the seventh. A Mindy Mikkelson single brought Trevino home and then Darby bashed a 3-run homer over the fence in left field.
“McQueen was focused today. It was their Senior Day,” Davidson said. “They played good games. We came away with the victories but they played us tough. I’m excited we finished league with an undefeated record. Now we have to get ready for regionals.”
Spanish Springs opens the double-elimination regional tournament with a noon game Thursday against the Sierra League’s No. 4 seed. The tournament will be held at Bishop Manogue.
