RENO — United Blood Services of Reno is setting aside a special day this year to honor all mothers at the donation centers at 1125 Terminal Way in Reno and 4670 Sparks Blvd. in Sparks.

“We are looking forward to our Mother’s Day special event when we have some great prizes and our Point of Impact program in conjunction with REMSA when they will perform free car seat safety checks for the first 30 cars at our Reno community donation center,” said Lisa Rogers, the Reno and Sparks fixed site supervisor for UBS.

Additionally, mothers will receive a beautiful carnation flower at both community donation centers. All donors will also receive a United Blood Services signature cholesterol check as another way of saying “thank you” for supporting the community blood program.

The event will go from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at both centers and appointments are recommended by calling 324-6454 or by going online at www.BloodHero.com.

To encourage the blood donation, UBS expanded its Hero rewards program. Donors now earn points for donating frequently and staying involved year after year. The points are redeemable for movie passes, restaurant gift certificates and other prizes. Donors can now redeem their rewards online for added ease and convenience.

Additionally, since May is United Blood Services’ Pint for a Pint month, all blood donors will receive a pint of super premium ice cream compliments of Model Dairy when donating at any of UBS of Reno’s three convenient community donation centers in Reno, Sparks or Carson City.

Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height and weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 16 must have signed permission from a parent or guardian.

UBS of Reno is the sole blood products supplier to 20 hospitals in northern Nevada. Every day, approximately 150 blood donations are needed to meet the increasing demand for their red blood cells, platelets and plasma.
