On Monday, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office detectives were notified by the Marysville Police Department in Snohomish County, Wash., of the death of John Francis Schmidt by an apparent suicide.

Schmidt, a convicted sex offender, was being sought by Washoe County Sheriff’s Office detectives in connection with an investigation into allegations of lewdness with a child under 14 years old. Schmidt had lived in the Sun Valley area at the time the new allegations came to light. A warrant had been issued for his arrest and Schmidt had apparently fled the area and his whereabouts were unknown.

Schmidt was originally convicted in Boise, Idaho, for lewdness with an 8-year-old male and later told detectives there he had victimized 38 other children in numerous states over a 20-year period.
