ELKO –– This summer, the U.S. Forest Service will replace several bridges located on the Meadow Creek Road, northeast of Wildhorse Reservoir. The Legacy Roads and Trails program is funding this $400,000 project. Construction is expected to last from mid-July through September. This construction work will complete replacement of all obsolete bridges located on Meadow Creek Road between Waterlog Summit and the Bruneau River.

The construction schedule will operate on a two-week cycle beginning the week of July 18. During each cycle, construction will begin on the first Tuesday and end on the second Thursday of the cycle. Five construction cycles are expected to replace the three bridges.

Detours around construction areas for the lower Meadow and middle Meadow Creek bridges will provide unlimited access to all locations along Meadow Creek Road for the project duration except for areas immediately adjacent to project construction sites.

The Forest Service will provide regular road construction updates this summer through several venues including a voice recording, posts to its website and press releases to keep Elko County residents and visitors informed of construction activities.

During replacement of the upper Meadow Creek Bridge, the Meadow Creek Road will be closed to all traffic between Hicks Mountain turn-off and Burnt Timber Creek for about five days. The closure will be required for worker and public safety in the narrow canyon. Steep rock cliffs and unique characteristics of the site prohibit construction of a detour or a ford across the river during construction of the upper Meadow Creek Bridge. Exact dates for the road closure will be posted on the Forest Service public website as construction nears. The anticipated closure dates are currently scheduled for Sept. 14 through 19.

Additional information about this project can be obtained by contacting the Forest Service office in Elko at (775) 738-5171, by viewing the website at http://www.fs.fed.us/r4/htnf/ or by calling (775) 778-6141 for a voice recording on construction project status.
