RENO — In addition to normal enforcement of driving under the influence laws, Reno police officers are conducting a two-week focused DUI enforcement campaign beginning Wednesday and running through May 9.

“The only way to diminish and prevent alcohol-related traffic deaths and injuries is to conduct operations that take DUI drivers off the streets,” Sgt. Jim Stegmaier said.

The Reno Police Department has a no-tolerance policy for those who fall within Nevada’s legal DUI blood alcohol limit of 0.08 or higher.

“There will be no warnings for DUI drivers,” Stegmaier said. “They will be arrested and booked into jail.”

First time DUI offenders face penalties that can include arrest, impounding of the vehicle being driven, two days to six months in jail or community service, a fine of $400-$1,000, a chemical test fee, attending DUI school or substance abuse treatment and participation before a victim impact panel. In addition, first-time offenders can have their driver’s license revoked and have to pay license reinstatement and other related feeds and may see a substantial increase in vehicle insurance fees, if the insurance carrier retains the individual as a client. A DUI arrest and or conviction remain in criminal history files for the rest of the individual’s life and convictions and license revocations also remain in an individual’s DMV record for the rest of their life.

Repeat DUI offenders face increased penalties.
