According to city spokesman Adam Mayberry, anyone who calls asking for donations on behalf of the Sparks Fire Department is operating as a scammer.
An unidentified caller who is associating themselves with the Sparks Fire Department is asking for donations, Mayberry said adding that this is not a legitimate call.
“Residents should not respond to this request,” Mayberry said.
Sparks fire captain and president of the Sparks firefighters union, Kevin Cavanagh, confirmed that the requests were phony.
“We have nothing like that going on,” he said. “We do not have any actions out there asking for donations.”
The Sparks Fire Department is in the process of laying off 11 sworn firefighters as the city of Sparks grapples with a $5 million budget deficit.
