RENO — The Reed High softball team kept its perfect High Desert League mark intact. The Raiders did so by posting 12-1 and 11-8 road wins over Reno Saturday.

The doubleheader sweep improved the RHS club’s mark to 18-3 overall and 11-0 in conference clashes.

Game 1 was all Reed. The Raiders scored in every inning and wound up enforcing the 10-run mercy rule after five innings when they extended their edge to double digits following a four-run rally in the top of the fifth.

The opener saw Reed get two runs in the first, three in the second, another in the third and two more in the fourth before its four-run fifth.

“I really liked our approach at the plate today, especially in the first game,” Reed coach Ray Charles said. “We put some nice swings on the ball ... It’s good to see we can score off quality pitching.”

Raiders ace hurler Destinee Levesque struck out eight and walked just one while limiting Reno to just two hits. She allowed only the three baserunners in the contest.

The Huskies’ only two hits on the day were back-to-back doubles by Cori Fisher and Nikki Rahming. The fourth-inning hits accounted for Reno’s only Game 1 run.

Reed wasted no time getting to work on offense. The Raiders got their two first-inning runs with two outs. Kristy Pasley singled and Makaela Moore walked. Both circled the sacks and scored.

In the Raiders’ second, Brooke Silva, Pasley and Moore all laced run-scoring singles.

Leading 8-1 after four innings, Reed put the game away in what would prove to be its final at-bat. The four-run frame started with a one-out single by Silva. Cori Gammon followed and was hit by a pitch and Pasley walked to load the bases. Reno recorded an infield popup for the second out, but it could not get out of the inning unscathed.

Shivaun Landeros ripped a two-run double. Mary Dettling hit into a fielder’s choice that scored a run and a Reno error, off the bat of Levesque, allowed the final Reed run to score.

Game 2 saw Reno throw a bit of a scare into its guests from Reed. The Raiders led 7-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth, but the Huskies stayed in contention by trimming the Reed advantage to 7-4 with a pair of runs.

Reed answered with four runs in the top of the sixth to forge ahead 11-4. Gammon reached on an error and Pasley drew a free pass. Landeros then proceeded to bash the softball off the fence in left-center field for a two-run double. Landeros was plated by a Moore double and Moore raced home on a Lindsay Yearman double.

However, the Huskies did not roll over and play dead. Still trailing 11-4 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Reno rallied. A two-run dinger by Fisher made the score 11-8, but Reed did finally get out of the inning after giving up four runs.

“I think Reno scored late, but we scored enough to be comfortable,” Charles said. “They got the runs late, but we got the wins and we’re happy to get the sweep today.”

Rookie Reno coach Joyce Cathey was pleased to see her squad show a little more fight in Game 2.

“We had a better mental approach,” she said. “I’m absolutely pleased we bounced back and played better. We were more focused and more optimistic.”

Reed got off to a good start in Game 2 of the twin bill. The Raiders got solo home runs from Silva and Pasley in the top of the first inning.

Reed and Reno (8-9, 6-5 HDL) will wrap up their three-game league series with a single game at Reed Monday at 3:30 p.m. The contest is a make-up date after inclement weather Thursday forced the league rivals to push back the single contest by four days.
