SPARKS — On May 8, northern Nevada letter carriers will again help Stamp Out Hunger! with citizens’ help in order to provide assistance to the rapidly increasing number of northern Nevadans who are struggling with hunger.

To help stamp out hunger this year, simply leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable, non-expired foods, like canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal, next to the mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on May 8. Washoe County postal customers will receive a bag in their mailbox to use for the drive prior to May 8 to help remind them and give them a convenient way to collect the food. Food items should be in non-breakable containers, such as boxes and cans. In addition to the postal pick-up, donors can give at the local grocery stores that weekend by placing food in conveniently placed barrels. Participating grocery stores are Raley’s, Scolari’s Food and Drug Company, Safeway, Save Mart Supermarkets and Smith’s Food and Drug. Local sponsors also include Drinkwater Law Offices, The Pampered Chef and Sierra Nevada Job Corps.

The local food drive will provide food to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, Project Mana in Truckee and Incline, FISH in Carson City in Dayton, Lyon County Human Services in Yerington, the Carson Valley Food Closet in Douglas County and the Churchill Community pantry in Fallon.

Now in its 18th year, the Stamp Out Hunger! effort is the nation’s largest single-day food drive. In 2010, national drive organizers hope to exceed last year’s record-setting total of 73.4 million pounds of donated food, as well as surpass 1 billion pounds of food collected over the history of the drive. In northern Nevada, more than 178,000 pounds of food was collected last year and organizers are hoping to gather larger than 180,000 pounds of food this year.
