RENO — Mike, now 57 years old, quit school in the ninth grade to go to work. Today, confident of his newly acquired math and writing skills, he is preparing to take the GED exam.

Truckee Meadows Community College’s Adult Basic Education Department has seen such an increase in people like Mike that it is in need of volunteers willing to give two or more hours a week to help adults learn to read, write and improve their math skills.

“We have seen an increase in the numbers of people who are seeking literacy training,” literacy coordinator Linda Schneider-Erger said. “We had to start a waiting list, as we don’t have enough tutors to assist potential students. Many of those coming in for assistance are out of work and need to improve their skills to compete for jobs.”

Mike, a former truck driver who was injured in 2007, could no longer keep his job. He was self-conscious about his writing and math skills and felt anxious at the thought of going to TMCC to complete his education.

“It wasn’t intimidating like I thought it would be," Mike said.

Like a snowball rolling downhill, I started realizing I could do things I never dreamed I’d be able to do. An essay that once would’ve taken me three days to write, now takes 50 minutes. I’m truly amazed.”

Mike credits his progress to his tutor.

“She was such a good tutor, and a very knowledgeable and interesting woman,” he said. “This has been a godsend to me.”

Adults wishing to volunteer and those looking to increase their reading, writing and math abilities are encouraged to call TMCC’s Adult Basic Education at 829-9033.
