Council members say today’s action was needed to help trim $5.2 million in expenses to balance the current budget.
They warn further layoffs may be needed after the new fiscal year begins July 1.
From a high of 1,590 full-time equivalent employees in the 2007-2008 fiscal year, the number of city employees is now 1,425 after 42 employees were laid off in January.
Officials say city government is now down to “bare bones,” and residents can expect longer response times for police officers and reductions in other services.
City employees to be laid off May 6 will get their pink slips on April 16.
