FERNLEY - The Reno Over the Hill Gang Chapter staged a very rare Saturday race at the Lion's Fernley Motocross Track. Despite being Easter eve, the turn out of riders was pretty good.

Those that showed up to race not only faced the usual challenge this sandy, fast track offers but they also had to deal with either a cool to cold day and a pretty chilling wind in the afternoon.

For one Sparks racer however, it was his time to shine as he swept all his races.

After taking the checkered at the end of the second 30+ pro moto Willy Heiss said, "I won the first moto and the club race also. The track's pretty nice and they did a lot of work on it yesterday so it's holding up pretty good."

His final moto in the pro division was a run away as he led from the very first turn until the checkered flag.

Asked how it is to be out front and alone, he said, "It's hard to keep your pace but right now we're training so I have to keep it going."

His goal is to be ready in two weeks for the OTHG National round over in California at the Hangtown course. That series will make its traditional stop at Fernley on Memorial Day weekend.

Two riders were the solo entries for their classes as Christopher Manzini for a win in the 450 pro division while Tony Fagundes was the 30+ expert winner.

Although many of the races were runaways, there were some hard fought battles for wins. One of which came in the second 250 intermediate moto.

When the gate dropped Kile Fye was on point going into the first turn. He was soon joined and challenged by Korie Hass as these two began a race-long duel for the victory.

Lap after lap both riders were either nose-to-tail or side-by-side as they swapped the lead. The rider in trail would then mount an outside-inside attack on who was leading at that time.

Finally Haas, a 17-year-old from Carson City, made what was the winning pass and put a small gap between himself and Fye. They finished in that order with less than a bike length between them.

"It was crazy and the track is super rough right now," Haas said after catching his breath. "I just pushed myself harder than normal, it was tight to the finish and super fun."

Another close race came in the second 450 intermediate moto. When the gate dropped Anthony Walsh took off with MRANN alumnus Ryan Toomey in hot pursuit.

After pressuring Walsh for a few laps, Toomey dropped back then seemed to get his second wind. After that he caught the leader as they tore around the track and flew over the jumps.

At the checkered flag both riders were almost nose-to-tail as they went across the finish line.

Walsh claimed his second victory in the schoolboy class while Toomey topped the 20+ intermediate field.

Only a few women were on hand and Taylor Koschella bested Hope Stillmock for that win.

Michelle Skender, a former rodeo barrel racer, didn't race in with the women but had a good showing finishing fourth in both the 250 and 20+ intermediate divisions.

The track was set up so that all the classes began the races at the main gate. However the Pee Wees and 65 beginners would go almost all the way down the starting chute then make a 180-degree turn to the left, which caused some of them problems.

From there they stormed up a short straight and onto their own course which was longer and featured tight and open sections as well as jumps these youngsters could easily handle.

The Pee Wee winners were Kole Krautstrunk, Danny Hillyer and Reile Cole, who also won the 65 beginner races.

While some riders went down most only suffered bruises or got to taste the sand. However, one rider was hurt bad enough that they were probably headed to have a doctor look at their injury.

Easter Sunday was practice day for both Fernley and at the Mustang Motor Plex, which featured a motorized egg hunt, in which some eggs contained free entry passes.

•There was one more Saturday race and that was when the Lovelock Speedway began its season with an afternoon event

.

Among the winners were Adam Walters, driving a 360 sprint car and Gene Kay, who has returned to the IMCA Modified ranks.

Other winners were Jeff Wilson (Hobby Stocks), Chris Gorgnone (Dwarfs) and Craig Niemen in Pro Stocks. The outlaw kart winners were Trey Walters (5-8 year olds) and Zach Cail (9-15 year olds).
