ZEPHYR COVE – Lake Tahoe Cruises and Zephyr Cove Resort, managed by Aramark Parks and Destinations, is hosting South Lake Tahoe fourth grade students and their teachers aboard the MS Dixie II for a special Earth Day celebration on April 22. For the second consecutive year, more than 300 students from public and private elementary schools in greater Lake Tahoe will board the M.S. Dixie II for a day of fun and learning on the lake.

A special two-hour cruise to Emerald Bay will depart from Zephyr Cove Resort at 9:30 a.m. and feature learning activities hosted by the MS Dixie II captain, U.S. Forest Service, Tahoe Douglas Fire District, Nevada Fire Safe Council, South Tahoe Public Utility District, Explore Tahoe and the Tahoe Resource Conservation District.

Learning opportunities on the cruise will include a tree costume that demonstrates the life of a tree and how it grows, local wildlife educational stations, a geology station and a water conservation and clarity station.

Firefighters from the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District will also be on board to educate students on forest fire prevention and safety.

“The 40th anniversary of Earth Day is an opportunity to celebrate Lake Tahoe’s natural beauty and to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth’s environment in our local youth,” said Jamie Hodgson, district manager for Aramark Lake Tahoe Operations. “Our Earth Day cruise will give future generations the unique opportunity to learn about preserving the lake and local wildlife while having fun.”

Through its environmental stewardship program Green Thread, Aramark Parks and Destinations is committed to protecting and restoring the nation’s natural, cultural and historical resources for the enjoyment, education and inspiration of this and future generations.
