The Railroaders went out to Dayton Saturday but were turned away by the Dust Devils to the tune of 4-3 and 12-7 defeats.

Sparks was up 3-1 in Game 1 of the 3A North doubleheader, but three runs in the bottom of the sixth by the home team secured at least a series win. Dayton made it a sweep by blowing out to an early 10-3 lead in the second game. The Railroaders could not get closer than 10-6 the rest of the way.

Alex Medina had two of Sparks’ four hits in the opener as the visitors out-hit Dayton 4-3 in the pitchers’ duel. Kirk Putman took the loss on the hill. Eight base on balls did not help his cause.

In Game 2, Joe Puccinelli and Dennis Morelli were both 3-for-4 with a home run but it was not enough.

“We were hitting the ball right at people,” Sparks baseball coach Greg Vasko said. “The first game we kind of beat ourselves basically. I was pleased with the way we hit the ball. We hit the ball better today. We just have to get everything together on the same cylinder.”
