The Reed softball squad finished off the sweep of McQueen in the teams' first High Desert League series of the year with a pair of easy victories, 15-5 in five innings and 8-2.

"It's good because McQueen is solid. They're going to beat some teams," Reed softball coach Ray Charles said. "It's nice to get some victories under our belt and start off on the right foot in league."

In the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, Reed uses the long ball to get off to a quick start.

Reed senior Brooke Silva launched a solo home run to center field to lead off the bottom of the first.

Mary Dettling doubled and then pitcher Kristy Pasley helped her cause by clearing the left-field fence with a two-run shot. Cori Gammon capped the four-run rally with an RBI single.

The Raiders posted a three spot on the board in the bottom of the fourth frame, increasing their lead to 7-0.

A fielding error in the infield enabled Sam Terry to reach base safely with no outs. Gammon recorded her second hit of the game by slapping a shot to right field. Reed loaded the bases thanks to an infield single by No. 9 hitter Kyndal Comphel.

Silva almost went deep again, but settled for a two-run double that went to the fence, pushing the gap to 6-0.

Sydney Jones drove in Comphel with a single to left field.

In the bottom of the fifth, Marissa Stevens singled in Lindsey Yearman, who had also singled.

Pasley got in a little bit of trouble in the top of the sixth when the Lancers loaded the bases with no outs. Pasley looked like she might escape the inning without any damage by inducing a comebacker to start a 1-2-3 double play.

But Paige Vannoy touched her up for a double that carried to deep center field, plating a pair of runs for the final 8-2 margin. Pasley scattered six hits for the win.

Reed's pitcher in the opener also helped her own cause. Destinee Levesque pounded two doubles, including a two-run double as part of the Raiders' six-run first inning.

The Blue and Gold committed a couple errors to start the game and it led to two unearned runs.

"I thought we hit the ball well. I was baffled by our defensive play at the beginning," Charles said. "I think we kind of turned it on and got a little bit better as the day went on. We try to pride ourselves on defense, but we kicked the ball around a little bit, which is not very common."

The Raiders responded in the bottom half of the first by knocking starting pitcher Hayley Glantz from the game with one out.

Reed batted around the order in the inning. Three straight walks helped force in a couple runs to tie the game. Then Gammon's two-run single and Levesque's two-run double in succession gave the home team the lead for good.

Dettling, Pasley, Jones, Levesque and Shivaun Landeros all had two hits in the rout. Makaela Moore drove in a pair of runs along with Pasley, Jones and Levesque.

McQueen managed seven hits off Levesque with Julia Willison leading the way with two hits and three RBIs. Levesque struck out four and did not walk anyone in five innings of work.

Reed (4-2, 3-0 HDL) is off until Friday when it welcomes Elko to town for the first game of the three-game series.

•At Reno High, Spanish Springs also dominated its way to a series sweep.

Senior ace right-hander Karlyn Jones picked up all three wins in the circle for the Cougars against the Huskies, but it was their bats that were impressive Saturday in the 8-5 and 25-3 doubleheader sweep.

Despite the close score in Game 1, Reno had to come back from being down 7-2 after the fifth inning to make it somewhat respectable.

Game 2 was never respectable after the Purple and Teal pushed across nine runs in the opening inning. The visitors later tallied seven in the fourth and eight more in the fifth on 17 hits total for the game.

In the recurring theme of the day, Jones helped her cause by belting out a home run. She had four RBIs in Game 2, pitching all but one inning on the day.

She had plenty of help from her teammates.

Leadoff hitter Ashley Decker was 3-for-6 and also went yard in the second game. She scored five runs and knocked in three RBIs.

Both Stevie Trevino and Karley Hopkins rapped out four hits apiece. Trevino had a team-high five RBIs and scored four runs, while Hopkins accounted for six runs total with three runs scored and three RBIs.

Karly Hall (3 runs, 3 RBIs) and Sydney Darby finished with three hits apiece. In the nightcap, Bella Rovens went 2-for-3 with three runs scored in the five-inning game.

"Overall I felt good," SSHS softball coach Jeff Davidson said. "We knew Reno swings the bats well. They're a very good hitting team. We won the first game 8-5, but we left a lot of runners on base like the other day. In the second game, we were more patient at the plate and that helped a lot."

Spanish Springs (5-1, 3-0 HDL) travels to Hug Thursday for a 3:30 p.m. league matchup.

•Sparks ran into a top California team at the Lassen Tournament Saturday and lost 8-3 to Red Bluff.

Coach Frank Avilla said pitcher Melissa Tallent was on fire and Allison Tallman, Kristina Avilla, Amanda Mahon, Katie Hippert and Krysti Collier all had multiple hits for the Railroaders.

The loss dropped Sparks to 1-3-1 overall and ended its tournament journey.
