Both moves were expected as Republican and Democratic senators met separately Tuesday morning to select their new leaders for the 111th Congress that begins in January.
Nevada’s power in the Senate grew with Ensign’s new role. He gained chairmanship of the Republican Policy Committee, the No. 4 position in GOP leadership, and will have a larger role in setting policy and legislative strategy.
Ensign had chaired the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the campaign committee for the Senate GOP.
“For Nevada, this position will lend an even stronger voice in the Senate,” said Ensign. “As a more senior member of leadership, I’ll have an influential voice at the negotiating table and be able to ensure that the interests of Nevadans are heard at the earliest stages of the legislative process.”
Reid was unchallenged to keep the majority leader job he’s held since Democrats took control of the Senate in 2006.
