RENO –– A portion of the ticket sales for the March 26 match between the Reno Bighorns and the Maine Red Claws will benefit the Reno Police Department and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guards and give basketball fans two games for the price of one with a pre-game match between the officers from the Reno Police Department and deputies from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.

The tickets are $10 per person and include the 4 p.m. match between Reno Police Department and Washoe County Sheriff’’s Office as well as entry into the Reno Bighorns game at the Reno Events Center. Additional information on advance ticket sales to benefit the Reno Police Department Honor Guard can be obtained by contacting Officer Kellie Fox or Washoe County Sheriff’s Sergeant Tony Miranda at 334-217.

Both honor guards are funded through donations and fund raising efforts such as the basketball game and are comprised of members who volunteer their time to represent their departments. The honor guards from the City of Reno and Washoe County help during times of tragic loss, such as in the line of duty deaths of law enforcement officers from California to New Hampshire. Honor guards also conduct honor services during funerals for retired officers and deputies such as former Mayor Bruno Menicucci and retired Washoe County Sheriff Bob Galli and military personnel such as World War II Medal of Honor recipient John Finn, among others.

In addition to participating in the basketball game fund raiser, the Reno Police Department Honor Guard also sells coffee cups and t-shirts to support its activities.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard was first established in the late 1970s. The Honor Guard also represents the Sheriff’s Office as well as our community during the National Law Enforcement Memorial ceremonies in Washington D.C. each year, which recognizes the ultimate sacrifice made by law enforcement officers across the country.
