SPARKS — Sparks police have arrested a man in the beating death of a 2-year-old boy earlier this month.

Police say 24-year-old Kevin Anthony Hunt is the boyfriend of the child's mother.

Hunt was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of murder and child abuse causing substantial bodily harm in the Feb. 5 death of Malakai Dean.

Police have said Hunt took Dean to a Sparks park and that the child stopped breathing at his home later that day from injuries that were originally blamed on a fall on a slide.

Police say they determined that the boy died of major blunt force trauma and they allege the child was in Hunt's care when he suffered the injury that caused his death.

A phone listing for Hunt couldn't be found and the Washoe County jail doesn't take messages for inmates.
