The Northern 4A champion Spanish Springs wrestling team had a tough go of it over the weekend at the state championship meet. None of the six SSHS wrestlers who qualified for state reached the finals and the Cougars managed just 9.5 team points, good for 21st overall.

Las Vegas steamrolled the competition, racking up 114 points to win the team title, easily outdistancing second-place Fallon, which finished with 39.5 points.

Spanish Springs did place two wrestlers. In the 103-pound weight class, Curtis Lampert finished third for the Cougars. In the 171-pound division, Clay Coleman finished fourth for Spanish Springs.

Todd Pearson, at 119s, reached the semifinals for Spanish Springs, but lost his next two matches and did not place.

In the 140-pound weight class, Jes Sylvester reached the quarterfinals for the Cougars only to lose to the eventual runner-up. He won a consolation match, but lost a second.

Blake Myers won his opening pigtail match for Spanish Springs, at 152s, before losing his next match. Myers won one consolation match before losing a second.

Spanish Springs heavyweight Billy Dean dropped his first two matches and was eliminated.

“It's disappointing and disheartening that the kids didn't have a better performance on the big stage,” Spanish Springs wrestling coach Joe Imelli said. “I would have loved to have seen every one of our wrestlers place, but it's hard.

“I look at what we've done, three straight league titles and back-to-back regional championships. I'm very proud of our kids and coaches. This is just the start of good things for Spanish Springs wrestling."

•For Reed High, Raiders wrestler Reece Dassinger took home a third-place finish in the 152-pound weight class.

•In the 3A, Sparks junior Roy Stralla had high hopes for a state championship at 125 pounds, but he was saddled with a 9-0 major decision defeat at the hands of Moapa Valley's Shae Bryant in the final.

Sparks wrestling coach Doug Walsh said Bryant took Stralla down and just worked him on the mat for most of the match.

It was a much different outcome than when Stralla beat Bryant in the 119-pound semifinals at state a year ago.

SHS teammate Anthony Arroyo was one match away from placing, but lost in the consolation semifinals.
