RENO — Mardi Gras is a time of special celebration and the Nevada Humane Society is pulling out all the stops on Saturday with its own New Orleans style Mardi Gras parade.

The “Mardi Paws” parade has a little twist as the featured saints will be animals who hope they are celebrating the find of a new home. The parade starts at 11 a.m. and will march through the shelter with cats and dogs decked out in costume and led by their special king and queen. All are welcome to join this special celebration of music, refreshments and merriment.

“The annual Mardi Paws parade through the shelter is colorful and a lot of fun,” said Adoption Manager Vanessa Porter. “You won’t want to miss meeting the animals and seeing the creativity of our volunteers who help to put this celebration together.”

Everyone can celebrate the Mardi Gras season by adopting a pet at a special price from now until Sunday at Nevada Humane Society.

Adult cats, 4 months and older, may be adopted for $10 and adult dogs, 4 months and older (excluding specially priced dogs), can be adopted for $45. All dogs and cats are spayed and neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before being adopted. These services would normally cost more than $200.

“I worked and lived in New Orleans for awhile and there was no happier time than Mardi Gras,”said Development Director Diane Blankenburg. “But it can be even more special knowing you gave a homeless pet a second chance at life and a new loving family.”

The shelter is located at 2825 Longly Lane in Reno and is open Sunday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m.

to 6:30 p.m.
