RENO — The Washoe County Democratic Party (WCDP) has planned a record-setting event for a non-presidential election year. The WCDP will hold its 2010 caucus on Feb. 27 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Wooster High School.
Gubernatorial Candidate Rory Reid will speak at the meeting that State Treasurer Kate Marshall will kick off. Secretary of State Ross Miller and State Controller Kim Wallin will also attend the event with 25 incumbents and candidates in attendance.
“Nevada Democrats are tremendously energized by the 2010 election cycle,” said Chip Evans, Washoe County Democratic Party chair. “We have three key goals. First, to return Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to Washington. Second, to build on the voter advantage we attained in 2008 and elect Democratic candidates up and down the ticket and, third, to elect a Democratic governor and state Legislature. For us, 2010 is just as important as 2008.”
The day will begin with registration from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Then, candidates speeches will run from 9 to 10:30 a.m., party business from 10:30 to 11 a.m. and from 11 a.m. to noon. Washoe County Commissioner Kitty Jung will provide special training on messaging. All registered Washoe County Democrats are strongly encouraged to participate. Voter Registration forms will be available at the caucus site. Washoe County residents can register as Democrats and participate in the caucus.
The WCDP caucus has a working agenda that enables all Washoe County Democrats to engage actively in their party. At the caucus, participants will select delegates to the April 24 WCDP County Convention, nominate members of the WCDP Central Committee and review planks for the county platform.
“The caucus is the embodiment of grassroots democracy,” said Amy Curtis-Webber, WCDP executive director. “Any registered Washoe County Democrat can participate and help determine the future of the county party. We are looking for a formidable presence of local Democrats and know that this event will re-energize our base.”
Admission is free, and WCDP suggests a $5 donation to help cover costs. For more information, call Curtis-Webber at 323-8683.
