The Sparks Police and Fire Department Dispatch Center is currently experiencing difficulty in processing 9-1-1 calls made from cell phones. The system is designed to require the caller to either press "any key" (numerical or the * or # keys) or speak “operator “after the voice prompts and tone.

The system will properly process the call if a key is pressed after the tone; however speaking “operator” will not complete the call to the emergency dispatcher.

Until this problem is resolved the public is requested to press “any key” on their cell phone when calling 9-1-1. Sparks Fire Division Chief said the cause of the problem is still under investigation.

Wired telephones are not affected by this problem.
