The Raiders qualified for 11 individual events and three relays for next weekend’s Northern 4A Region Track and Field Championships at Damonte Ranch, while the Cougars will send athletes in nine individual events and two relays.
Reed didn’t get everyone qualified that was expected, but a couple surprises helped overshadow the disappointments.
“We’re definitely excited about next week,” Reed track and field coach Dale Moss said. “We had more guys qualify this year than last year, so that shows the program is going in the right direction. But when you don’t qualify some of the guys you expected, it kind of puts a lull in your day.”
Sophomore Jesse Robards was brought to the qualifying in order to earn experience, but the first-year track participant qualified in the boys triple jump.
Zach Comphel qualified in the most individual events for the Raiders and will race in the finals for the 110-meter and the 300-meter hurdles.
Sprinters Tyler Olivero (100m), Aaron Greenblat (400m) and Ryan Nelson (800m) all moved on to the finals in their respective races. Chris Gay qualified in the 3,200m.
Also qualifying in a field event for Reed was Zach DeBoer in the shot put.
On the girls’ side, Adrienne Hill left a lot of room to spare by earning the top seed in the shot put and the second seed in the discus. The top nine throws in the events reached the finals.
Freshman Emily Heywood was another pleasant surprise as she qualified in the pole vault.
The Raiders’ boys 4x200m relay and both 4x800m relays will be vying for regional glory.
For the Cougar boys, Cody Clifford led the way and will get a shot in the 100m and the 400m. Justus Mora will join him in the 100m.
Mitch McLane qualified in both throwing events.
Sullivan Stevens scorched the track to the best time in the 110-meter hurdles.
Dallin Dold tied for first in the high jump to advance.
Freshman Laura Voss was a standout for the Spanish Springs girls. The freshman will run in the 100m, 200m and the 300m hurdles Saturday.
Both the SSHS 4x100m relays qualified for the regional championships.
