Normally that wouldn’t have been a big deal, but it cost Williford a perfect game. Williford then induced a game-ending fielder’s choice and had to settle for his first no-hitter ever in Reed’s 11-0 win Thursday.
“It’s my first, so it’s pretty unbelievable,” Williford said. “Everything was working. I was locating everything and just felt strong. It puts us in good position to take third. We’re just hoping for a miracle and Elko beating Galena.”
After falling 5-0 a day earlier to the Greenwave, the Raiders’ offense was solid in the second game of the three-game High Desert League series.
Reed rapped out 11 hits and scored six runs in the second inning and five more in the fourth to set up the 10-run mercy rule that stopped the game after the top of the fifth.
“We came out a little more focused today. We had a better approach at the plate,” Reed coach Jon Foss said. “It helps that Derric Williford threw an incredible game. I told the guys that anytime your pitcher throws a no-hitter, it’s a great experience to be a part of. It’s a great experience for Derric. It’s something he’ll be able to talk about for a long time.
“There have been a lot of pitchers who go through all the levels of this game and never had the chance to say they threw a no-hitter. I’m happy for him. He’s worked really hard.”
Williford helped his cause by driving in the first and only run he would need with an RBI double. Duran DiQuarto scored on the two-bagger after recording a double of his own. Williford scored on a Dohn Matteoni sacrifice fly.
Reed capped the six-run rally with RBI singles by Casey Yocom, Chris Hawthorne and CJ Maldonado and a John Pelino run-scoring double.
In the fourth, Hawthorne had another RBI single and scored on a wild pitch. Maldonado drove in a run with a double and scored on Pelino’s RBI groundout. Williford singled and later scored on a wild pitch for the final 11-0 margin.
Williford finished with five strikeouts on the mound. His effort Thursday helped Reed clinch at least the HDL’s third seed in next week’s regional tourney.
The two teams finish off the series with a 3:30 game at Reed today.
