SPARKS –– On Wednesday morning, Sparks firefighters responded to a fire at a fourplex on the 1700 block of York Way.

Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the chimney but only a little smoke inside the condominium.

Upon investigation, crews found smoldering pellets in the hopper area of a pellet stove. The pellets were removed and the condo ventilated. There was no fire spread to the building or contents of the condo and no one was at home at the time of the fire.

Sixteen personnel responded including a battalion chief, three structure engines, one truck company and two safety officers.

According to firefighters, the cause of the fire was either a malfunctioning feeder system or the build-up of creosote in the feeding tube which ignited.
