Arrests made several weeks ago at the University of Nevada, Reno campus have helped Sparks Police solve more than 20 local cases, police reported Tuesday.

On April 12 at 5 a.m., UNR police officers located a blue SUV parked near Piccole Field on the UNR Campus. The UNR officers made contact with five male juveniles near the vehicle and found the juveniles had more than 100 items of stolen property in the vehicle. The UNR officers correlated this incident with a previous media release from the Sparks Police Department regarding juveniles committing vehicle and residential burglaries while driving a SUV. The juveniles were taken into custody for possession of stolen property.

Members of the Sparks Police Crime Suppression Unit and Detectives met with UNR police and coordinated an investigation. This resulted in multiple items of property being linked to several vehicle and commercial burglaries in Sparks. Numerous items of property have been returned to owners.

To date a total of 22 Sparks cases have been cleared. Fifteen vehicle burglaries from the Wingfield Springs and D’Andrea areas have been cleared. Seven Commercial Burglaries — two at YMCA on Baring Boulevard, two at Ace Hardware on Baring, one at the Eternal Boardshop on Los Altos Parkway, one at Subway on Greenbrae Boulevard and one at Home Depot on Galleria Parkway — have also been cleared. An additional suspect has been identified and arrested. The original suspects have been charged for their individual involvement in the crimes.

Information provided indicates the juveniles were using one person to drive a vehicle while at least two others and sometimes four would make their way down each side of a street burglarizing open vehicles. A handgun was stolen in one vehicle burglary and was carried by a suspect during their crimes.

Additionally, if anyone has been the victim of an unreported burglary on or around this date, contact the Sparks CSU at 353-2241 ext #528. Numerous items of confiscated property have not been linked to known crimes.
