Malakai Dean, 2, was found not breathing just before 11:30 p.m. Friday at his Round Mountain Circle home following an afternoon park play date. Paramedics arrived on scene first and began treating the boy but he was unresponsive and was taken to Northern Nevada Medical Center by REMSA where he died a short time later.
Police have interviewed the boy's family and friends and are labeling the case a death investigation rather than a homicide.
However, after police saw trauma marks on the child, Lt. Tom Miller said they are continuing to investigate Malakai's death.
Police declined to comment on what the trauma marks were.
An autopsy was performed on Saturday and the results are pending.
The police investigation has determined that the boy may have been playing on or around the playground at Deer Park on Friday.
Malakai is a black boy age 2 1/2. He was reportedly wearing a red "Cars" (from the Disney movie) zip up sweatshirt, a red and black T-shirt and blue jeans. He may have been playing with other children.
Malakai reportedly fell while at the playground and while on the slide. Malakai was with a black adult male in his 20s, who Miller said is not a suspect in the case. The man was driving a white 2007 Toyota Camry with four doors and tinted windows. They were reported to be at the park for a short time between 4:15 and 5 p.m.
The Sparks Police Detective Division is asking anyone that saw or interacted with Malakai to contact the detective division at 353-2225 or Secret Witness at 322-4900.
