Tribune/Tony Contini Victoria Taber, owner of NiTCH Productions, displays some past talent she has worked with, Dani Leavitt (left) and Katherine Riding.
“There’s nothing too small or too big,” Taber said. “I can do anything.”
NiTCH Productions specializes in providing talent and event planning. Clients can come to Taber with an idea and she’ll make it happen. They could even come to her clueless and they will likely end up with an event they never could have imagined themselves. But it doesn’t have to be extravagant.
“It could be something as simple as having a party in the backyard,” Taber said. “I can provide servers so the hosts don’t have to worry about anything.”
After working for free for a friend’s company in Las Vegas, Taber decided it was time to take matters into her own hands. She started her company, moved to Reno about a year ago and recently joined the Sparks Chamber of Commerce. But she’s been finding that the Sparks-Reno area isn’t Vegas.
“People here are blown away by the simplest acts,” Taber said. “They’ve just never seen it before.”
Taber would love to change that but so far business in the area has been slow. Southern Wine and Spirits in Sparks and Harrah’s in Reno are two of Taber’s regular clients but she would like to expand that list exponentially. And she doesn’t just want to work for businesses and the entertainment industry. She’s looking to work for the average Joe, as well.
“I do everything,” Taber said. “Children’s birthday parties, Bar Mitzvahs, sweet sixteens, cirque acts. Anything.”
Taber added that there has never been a time when she couldn’t provide something for a client.
“I’m very lucky because I’m an ex-performer,” she said. “I can make two calls and get it.”
As an ex-showgirl herself, Taber knows the ins-and-outs of the entertainment industry. She also used to do stunt work – she’s been lit on fire and broke her arm twice while performing in Treasure Island’s show in Las Vegas.
Taber has been doing everything she can to get the word out about her services. Taber said she’s hung fliers everywhere – including gyms – and often spends hours and hours e-mailing potential clients.
She also wants to make sure people don’t have any misconceptions – whether they are about the pricing or the event itself.
“These things can be done for not that much money,” Taber said. “And I guarantee you that I’m cheaper than (other companies) are.”
She has hired a hula or hip-hop dancers to give lessons for birthday parties for as little as $100 or servers for $20 an hour to help take stress off the hosts and have beautiful people serving food and drinks. Whether it’s a face painter, showgirl greeting an out-of-town guest, a catwalk over a glistening pool or a classical violinist, Taber has provided it all.
“There’s so much available to people that they just don’t know about,” Taber said. “We’ve done the most amazing stuff.”
Even though business has been slow, Taber is here to stay.
“I traveled for so long,” Taber said. “I want to be here. I want to be home.”
In the spring Taber plans to promote golfing events but she is still being optimistic that the parties will pick up.
“What I hope happens is that one person throws a huge party – everyone always wants to out do the last person,” she said.
Sparks and Reno residents may not have this keeping-up-with-the-Joneses mentality but that’s not going to stop Taber from trying.
“Let’s change the way we’ve been doing things for 50 years,” Taber said. “This is cool stuff.”
