Reed scored 12 runs in the initial inning to start off a good night for the home team.
Chris Hawthorne and Fabian Reza opened up that first inning with singles for Reed and both stole a base to put runners on second and third. Sam Petrie was hit by a pitch by Hug’s Miguel Macias to load up the sacks for Reed. Duran DiQuarto then hit a two-run double to put Reed on the scoreboard.
Two batters later, Kyle Wood sent out a line drive to plate Petrie and DiQuarto.
After that, there was no stopping Reed. The Raiders scored eight more runs in the inning. Macias left the hill after facing 12 Reed batters and only posting one out.
The Hawks didn’t help themselves in the inning by committing three errors and issuing five walks.
Hug’s Steve Price was walked in the first inning and stole two bases to make it to third. That was the closest the Hawks would get to pushing across a run. Hug was limited to two hits on the night.
Reed added three more runs in the second inning. Reza singled and Petrie was walked. Stephen McDonald hit a grounder to score Reza. Wood hit a shot to center to collect two more RBIs, he had four RBI’s and was 3-for-4 on the night.
The Raiders were quiet in the third but scored four more in the fourth inning to account for the final 19-run margin.
Reed had 12 hits against the Hawks.
Aaron Taylor picked up his first win of the season. Taylor pitching all five innings. He faced 18 batters, gave up zero runs against six strikeouts.
“I’m really happy for Aaron Taylor,” Reed coach Jon Foss said. “He went out in this cold weather tonight and did a great job. That’s a great job on his part, just taking it and throwing strikes.”
Despite the win, Taylor had mixed emotions over his performance.
“I wish I would’ve done a little better myself,” Taylor said. “I feel like I didn’t have all my stuff today but it worked out in the end. There was one or two batters that could pull the ball pretty well and I kept working them inside. My fielders did a good job on stopping them.”
Reed coaches took the Hug matchup as a chance to give the starters a rest and give other players some playing time.
“Some of the guys who haven’t got to play that much got to play, get out there and get some experience,” Foss said.
Reed plays today at 3:30 p.m. at South Tahoe in another non-league match up and next Tuesday against Douglas. Reed’s next league series starts in eight days against Spanish Springs.
“We’re going to prepare by practicing hard,” Foss said. “And we’re playing a good team in Douglas next Tuesday also. Hopefully that will get us mentally prepared to play a good baseball team at Spanish Springs.”
After a strong outing against Hug, Foss said his team still has a lot to work on to gear up for its Sparks foe.
“We’ve really got to work on defense,” he said. “It’s a lot of little things: laying down bunts, hitting and getting the ball on the ground, pitchers locating pitches where we want them to on certain counts. It’s a lot of mental stuff more than anything.”
