A day after the Raiders fell to the Huskies in a low-scoring outing, Reed followed that up with only 38 points against the Panthers. However, it was still good enough for Reed to get back to its winning ways. The Blue and Gold scrapped its way to a 38-28 road triumph Saturday.
“Last night was four quarters battled out. You have to come in the next day when you’re a little sore and mentally exhausted and play again,” Reed girls basketball coach Sara Schopper said. “As a coach, we were pretty much focusing on Reno. We didn’t run our offense against the zone because Reno plays man. So we were a little sloppy with the ball today against the 3-2 zone.”
RHS fans who made the trip to North Valleys kept waiting for the Raiders' offense to get going, but it never really did against the Panthers’ zone defense.
The outcome was still in question midway through the third quarter when Diamond Bolden scored on back-to-back possessions for the home team. That tied the game at 24-24. Bolden finished with seven points.
Reed was able to answer back with the final six points of the third period, capped by a Micah Walker breakaway layup, which was started by a Nyasha LeSure block on the other end.
The Raiders maintained their momentum heading into the fourth quarter. LeSure and Honour Knudsen both scored down low, pushing the gap to 34-24 with 6:42 left in the game. The 10-0 rally made it a double-digit game for the first time.
A Shakia Walker free throw ended a cold streak for the Panthers, who hadn’t scored in nearly eight minutes. By that time, the lead was too great and North Valleys was forced to take shots it was not comfortable with in order to play catchup.
“All Reno High game we played a triangle-2. Today we didn’t do it until the fourth quarter, and I probably should have done it earlier because I think that’s what helped us in the fourth quarter, getting Diamond and Shakia out of rhythm and making their teammates shoot shots they’re not comfortable with,” Schopper said.
Although the game was close throughout, Reed only trailed once at 9-8. But then a Leilani Young trey quickly made it 11-9 in favor of the Raiders at the end of the first quarter.
For the first five and a half minutes of the second quarter. North Valleys’ Kayt Hrenkg and LeSure were the only two players to score. Both had a pair of buckets.
Reed was able to grab a 21-18 edge at the intermission.
Reed's Danielle Peacon led all scorers with 15 points, while LeSure helped inside with eight points.
Shakia Walker paced North Valleys with 12 points.
Reed (10-4, 5-2 HDL) has two home games next week — Tuesday against McQueen and Friday against Elko.
