Janik will discuss how to prune and train fruit trees to maximize their production and keep them looking good. He will also discuss how to restore older trees.
Janik is a local expert well-equipped to answer all fruit-growing questions. Not only does he have his Master Gardener training from Cooperative Extension, he has also put his training and additional research to work, growing more than 100 apple varieties in his 4,000-square-foot orchard. He also grows several cherry, plum, peach and nectarine trees, as well as currants, grapes, elderberries, raspberries and hops. He is accomplished at grafting and specializes in growing espalier fruit trees, which are trained to grow flat against a trellis or lattice.
The workshop is part of the “Gardening in Nevada” series of free classes presented by Master Gardener volunteers of UNR Cooperative Extension at 6:30 p.m., every Tuesday in February and March, beginning Feb. 2, at Bartley Ranch.
“Gardening in Nevada” is cosponsored by Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space.

The Cooperative Extension’s Master Gardener program trains local gardeners and works with them to disseminate safe, effective gardening information to their communities.
Cooperative Extension is the college that extends knowledge to local communities to address important issues. Faculty and staff reached hundreds of thousands of Nevada citizens last year with research-based information on agriculture, horticulture, natural resources, health and nutrition, community development and children, youth and families.
