For one Reno pro it might as well have been a sunny summer day as he swept both his motos.
After taking his final checkered flag of the day, Taylor Bittner said, "It was really good, I got off to a good start and the track's pretty smooth and slick. The rain made it way better, softened it underneath and there's lots of traction in some spots. The dirt's really good and the best I've ever seen."
He dominated both of his races and after every start, let everyone eat his sand. There was one other pro winner and that was Justin Mastalka, who took the 30+ honors.
The track received some pretty heavy rain around midnight Saturday and the moisture helped set up the usually dry sand. As a result the racers got in some very fast laps as they tore around the course.
Young Brian Sjogren looked like he might make it a triple for the day but things didn't work out that way. In the Schoolboy racers, Robert Perez won after Sjogren had some problems.
"On the first lap I went into a corner too hot and washed out on a berm," Sjogren said. "I caught up to third and if I had another lap I would have finished second but was satisfied with third."
In the second moto, Sjogren went out early leaving Perez to claim the victory with Dylan Bauer second.
It wasn't a wash for Sjogren as he swept both the 125/250 and 250/450 intermediate races.
When his final moto ended, Sjogren said, "I had a good start and got a second hole shot. Then I just looked forward and keep charging."
Sjogren was one of three riders scoring multiple victories during the day.
One of them, Dylan Bauer, came all the way from Elko to race on Fernley's sand and won both the 125/250 and 250/450 classes.
For this 15-year-old high school freshman, the day a tune up for his regular competition.
"It was pretty easy as I'm a national rider," he said, "I'm going to Texas in February twice and all I do is the nationals and sometimes these races. At the nationals I race in 250 and 450 Novice, Stock Mod and Schoolboy."
Another multiple winner and the only rider to score a triple was young Gavin Clouser. He went on to win the 65cc intermediate, 85cc junior and supermini races as well as scoring at least a couple of hole shots along the way.
Over the years the Stillmock brothers, Butch and Scott, have owned Fernley's sand. On this day their younger sister and her niece showed that a new generation was taking their role.
When the first women's moto began Normajean Blanchette led the charge until Shami Potratz, the Stillmocks' sister, took the point. In the second moto, it was Potratz from starting gate to checkered flag.
"I was feeling pretty good today," she said. "I came out and practiced about mid-week, burned quite a few laps and that helped a lot. I just love the sand as its kind of what I grew up with and it's what I like."
While Potratz got the winner's trophy, her niece, Hope Stillmock, wound up third and scored her first podium finish.
During the day there were several crashes but no one was transported to the hospital. One was hurt badly enough to be taken to the hospital by her father due to both wrists being injured.
Now the racers get a few weeks off until the final event of the year when Sierra MX closes its season at the Hawthorne motocross track the weekend of December 6 and 7.
•Next Sunday starting around 10 a.m., the Silver Peak MX series closes out its fall season at the Mustang Motor Plex. Any championships undecided will be on the line and it should be an action packed day of hard racing.
