The Sparks City Council will welcome one new face Monday as they convene for the first time with the newly elected Ward 1 member Julia Ratti.

The 3 p.m. meeting will convene with a special session when the former Sparks City Council certifies the results of the Nov. 4 election, also called a canvass of the votes. Following the canvassing, the city council will officially disband and the oath of office will be administered by Judge Jim Spoo to the newly elected members.

Ratti will be taking the place of John Mayer, who has completed his allowable terms in office.

Incumbent City Attorney Chet Adams will also be taking the oath as the only other city official who ran opposed. Both Ratti and Adams captured more than 60 percent of the vote. Council members Ron Smith and Ron Schmitt will also be sworn in for another term, both running unopposed in the past election.

Following the special city council meting, the new council will convene for some city business. Along with alcohol licenses and grant approvals, the council will decide the position of Mayor Pro Temp. According to city officials, the position will be decided after one council member introduces a name, makes a motion and the motion receives a second and a final vote. The Mayor Pro Temp is charged with fulfilling the responsibilities of the Mayor if he is incapacitated or unable to attend a meeting due to a conflict.

Other items on the agenda include:

A presentation from the director of bands at Edward C. Reed High School concerning a possible student trip to Sparks’ sister city, Longford, Ireland.

Consideration of a $54,003 capital improvement project to replaster the main pool and tot pools at Alf Sorensen Community Center. If approved, the work would begin in December.

Consideration of an engineering agreement for work on phase two of the Rock Park Whitewater project. The $56,500 agreement would allow Wood Rodgers engineers to move forward with engineering and surveying on the project.
